Carry A. Nation: Retelling the Life (Religion in North America), by Fran Grace

"A needed and welcome account of Carry Nation’s story... deserves the highest praise." ―Journal of American History

"Admirably interweaves early 20th-century religious culture, regional politics, the suffrage and temperance movements, and the woman who worked zealously to unite them all." ―Library Journal (starred review)

In her well-received biography of Carry A. Nation, Fran Grace unfolds a story that often contrasts with the common public image of Nation as "Crazy Carry," a bellicose, blue-nosed, man-hating killjoy. Using newly available archival materials and placing Nation in her various historical and cultural contexts, Grace "retells" the crusader’s tumultuous life. This complexly woven and delightfully written biography begins the work of recovering Nation’s often fascinating, often disturbing life.

Outstanding scholarly work
By Battleship
This was an outstanding book. The author demonstrated a great knowledge about theological matters. This context is crucially important for understanding the work of women reformers of the era and Carry Nation in particular. Carry was brought up in a strict Campbellite religious environment. This was an austere and confining tradition and Carry struggled with limitations and fitting the accepted role expected of women in that culture and era.

Carry lost her first husband to alcoholism and this undoubtedly fueled her passion for temperance. She had an unhappy and disappointing marriage to David Nation. She began to embrace a more eclectic view of the Christian faith. She claimed to have experienced a spirit baptism found in the nascent Holiness traditions. She believed God gave her a mandate to take a public role of ministry. This did not set well with the patriarchal models of church that she was affiliated with. She was forced to leave several church congregations because of her outspoken views and the fact that as a woman she was preaching from the pulpit.

The author pointed out that Carry experienced a lot of tragedy in her life. Her daughter Charlien had serious medical problems. David Nation divorced her as the two drifted away from each other. Carry was a charismatic speaker with great boldness. She embarked on a saloon smashing enterprise. She was enraged that Kansas saloons were allowed to flourish despite the fact that such establishments were illegal in the dry state. She was upset that law enforcement did next to nothing, so she took matters in her own hands.

The author was critical of Carry in spots. She correctly points out that Carry was sometimes motivated by a love of publicity and she had a hard time collaborating with others. However, Carry was not necessarily the crazy and mentally unbalanced woman that is the common stereotype. There were a host of others who had radical agendas. Strong woman activists were sometimes ridiculed or demonized in the media accounts of the day.

The author points out that Carry was a bit of a paradox. She was a women's rights activist, but clearly within a traditional Christian context. She was not real popular in either circle at times. The WCTU kept a distance from her more controversial methods despite the fact that she was always a supporter of the group. Carry had a populist appeal that was appreciated by many people in contemporary Kansas. She had a sizable base of support.

This was a great book. The author presented a complex and nuanced look at Nation the person and reformer. Her religious syncretism and political activism were clearly delineated. She was presented in the context of geographical culture and her own time frame. The author did a fine job of separating fact from fiction of this highly controversial figure.

Fresh History
By zwrite1
I expected a somewhat crazed religious zealot, what I found was a feminist way ahead of her time, a woman of compassion, high-spirited, committed, entertaining, smart. This is an excellent, well-written book. Thank you, Fran Grace, for brining a fresh perspective to this woman's legacy.
