Who polices the world of covert operations? Enter the Cellar, the most secret spy organization hiding deep within the United States.

Deep in the forests of Kentucky, a girl is held captive.

In Oklahoma, a young preschool teacher is murdered in front of her students.

In the Panhandle of Florida, a college undergrad is kidnapped from a nightclub.

These seemingly unrelated crimes catch the eye of the Cellar, the ultrasecret cell of operatives set up to police all other government agencies. Cellar operatives Gant and Neeley, along with profiler Susan Golden, must track down those responsible. But these are not ordinary criminals. They are a highly trained Special Forces sniper team. Crisscrossing the United States as new Cellar head Hannah Masterson calls the shots from up high, the Cellar operatives soon find themselves being targeted. Whoever is behind this knows the ultra top-secret Cellar's tactics all to well.

Underneath this web of death, deceit, and revenge lies an even more shocking crime...a conspiracy that powerful men will sacrifice their lives - and the lives of their families - to protect.

Really great novel ... needs a proof-reader.
By CC10
This is my first exposure to Bob Mayer ... and I am now a fan!

This ebook surprised me with the strong story and just enough technical details to keep me interested without entering the domain of Clancy level technical minutiae. I loved the characters and the character development. But, the plot and developing story line is what kept me glued to my Kindle for hours on end.

I'm absolutely hooked on this author now and will read everything he's written.

The only negative, and I believe it's a significant one, is the need for a proof reader. I could barely go a few pages without coming across missing or mis-used words. No spelling errors (so spell check must work:-)), but the need for human review is obvious as you find the wrong use of "too" vs "to", "of" vs "off", missing words, and mis-used words. It became really distracting in the second half of the novel.

Please, Mr. Mayer, pay someone to proof-read your work in the future. (This is a 5-star book without these careless errors.)

Excellent book - Poor editing
By M. J. Diver
I thoroughly enjoyed the content of this book but was constantly distracted by the numerous (over 50) editing errors I found - extra or missing words, improper tenses, extraneous character names, misspellings etc. Over the past two years I have read over 120 kindle books, both fiction and non-fiction, and have yet to read a book without editing errors but the average is around 5 per book. I thought this book had excessive errors that should have been corrected before its release in digital format. This is the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more of his work when I can be assured that the editing has improved - kind of like reading high school essays before we had spell and grammar check.

Disappointing
By C. Dwinell
Having first been introduced to Bob Mayer through The Line, I had high expectations for this book. To be succinct, I was disappointed. As one reviewer noted there were many, many editing errors - which was distracting. More than that, the story was very convoluted. It started good, but Mayer wove another aspect, upon another aspect, upon yet another aspect. Instead of making the story richer, it only made it more confusing.

The characters were two dimensional. And there were a lot of background characters that did not enrich this story, but only added to the confusion, making much of the story seem contrived.

It's possible Lost Girls would have been better had I read Bodyguard of Lies first, but I doubt it.

The only reason this wasn't 1 star is because the story was action-packed and written well enough to make me wonder what was coming next. It was fast-paced and gripping. Mayer could have focused on the main characters, introduced more aspects of the conspirators sooner, and thereby stream-lining the story and it would have been better.

It was quiet in the lamplit room, the only sound the occasional rustle of paper as the man seated on one side of the vast antique desk went through the contents of the file in front of him. He was unhurried, his black brows drawn together in a faint frown as he closely scanned each printed sheet in turn, then laid it aside.

The grey-haired man sitting opposite watched him, under the guise of studying his fingernails. It was over two years since they'd had cause to meet face to face, and there was no longer even a trace of the boy he had once known in the dark, incisive face bent over the documents he had brought for him only a few hours ago.

He had been welcomed with the usual courtesy, conducted by the maggiodomo to the room where he would spend the night, after which he had dined alone with his host. The food had been delicious, and on the surface, it was all charm and relaxation, but he was under no illusions.

The real business of his visit was being conducted right here and now.

Eventually, his reading concluded, the younger man looked up and gave a brief nod of approbation.

'You have been more than thorough, Signor Massimo. I commend you. An entire life laid out for my inspection in every detail. Invaluable.'

His swift smile momentarily softened the hard lines of his mouth and brought an added glint to eyes that were almost the colour of amber, flecked with gold.

It was a proud face with a high-bridged nose, classically moulded cheekbones and an uncompromising chin.

But now too austere to be truly handsome, thought Guido Massimo as he inclined his head in polite acknowledgement. And too coldly purposeful. The face of a stranger.

He waited as the other took the photograph which was the last object remaining in the file and studied it. The girl looking back at him was blonde, her pale hair hanging in a sleek silken curtain almost to her shoulders. Her face was oval with creamy skin, her eyes a clear grey. Her nose was short and straight, her chin firm and the delicately curved lips were parted in a slight but confident smile.

'When was this taken?'

'A few months ago on the occasion of her engagement,' Signor Massimo returned. 'It appeared in a magazine published in the county where she was brought up.' He allowed himself a discreet twinkle. 'Che bella ragazza.'

His comment received only an indifferent shrug.

'This cool Anglo-Saxon type has no appeal for me.' The other's mouth twisted. 'Which, under the circumstances, must be deemed fortunate.' He paused. 'But no doubt her fi-danzato will have a very different view and will pay the required price for her safe return. Or we must hope so.'

Signor Massimo murmured politely, keeping his expression impassive. He was well aware that his host's tastes in women favoured the elegantly voluptuous, but it would have been unwise even to hint that he possessed such knowledge.

The younger man returned the photograph to the file with an air of finality and leaned back in his chair, frowning again. 'The wedding is scheduled to take place in two months, which means there is no time to be lost. However it will make the resolution of the matter increasingly urgent, which is all to the good.'

Almost absently he began to play with the heavy gold signet ring he wore on his right hand. 'Tell me more about this television company she works for. You say it makes programmes for various arts channels?'

'And with some success. She is currently a researcher with a desire to move into production, but it seems marriage will end such hopes. As I have mentioned in the report, her fi-danzato has already made it clear that he does not want his wife to work.'

The other nodded. 'And this has a caused—a certain amount of friction?'

'It seems so. As yet unresolved.'

'Ambition versus love.' The cool, deep voice spoke more softly. Became almost meditative. 'Which will she choose, I wonder, when serious temptation is offered.' He paused. 'Are you a betting man, Signor Massimo?'

'On rare occasions only.'

'And where would you place your money in such a situation.'

Guido Massimo gave a faint shrug. 'A girl soon to be a bride. She will wish to please her groom, I think.'

'You are unexpectedly romantic, signore. But I feel you are mistaken.' His smile was a curl of the lips. 'Because I know the bait that will bring her to me.'

'If I can be of further assistance…' the older man began, but was stopped by a raised hand.

'I am grateful but I believe that from here it is better for your involvement to cease. What happens should be my responsibility, and I would not wish you to have to answer any awkward questions, so the less you know the better.'

His tone became brisker. 'Leaving just the matter of your fee to be dealt with.' He opened a drawer in the desk, extracted a bulky envelope and handed it over. 'For the same reasons, we agreed this transaction should be on a cash basis. You may of course count it.'

'I would not dream of such a thing.'

'As you please.' The other paused. 'Which means I have only to thank you once more and wish you a peaceful night. We shall meet tomorrow at breakfast.'

Guido Massimo rose, made a slight bow and walked to the door where he hesitated. 'I must ask this. You are—determined? Quite sure there is no other course? The girl, after all, is an innocent party in all this. Does she deserve to be treated in such a way? I only enquire, you understand.'

'I comprehend perfectly. But you must not distress yourself, my friend. Once I have what I want, your bella ragazza will be returned as good as new to her future husband.' He added unsmilingly, 'That is, of course, if she still wants him.' He rose too, tall and lithe, his hands resting on his lean hips. 'There is no necessity to pity her, I assure you.'

But I shall do so, just the same, Guido Massimo thought as he left the room. And I shall also pity the boy I once knew, and remember him in my prayers.

'Darling,' said Jeremy. 'Please tell me this is some sort of joke.'

Madeleine Lang put down her glass and stared at him across the table in the wine bar in genuine perplexity. 'A joke?' she repeated. 'I'm talking about work here and perfectly serious. Why on earth would I be joking?'

Jeremy gave a hollow laugh. 'Oh, just a small matter of a wedding for over two hundred guests to arrange. Or will that be put on hold while you roam round Italy on some wild goose chase?'

Madeleine bit her lip. 'Hardly on hold, with your stepmother so firmly in control. I doubt if my absence will even be noticed.'

There was an edgy pause, then Jeremy reached across and took her hand, his expression rueful. 'Sweetheart, I know Esme can be rather managing.'

Madeleine sighed. 'Jeremy, that's putting it mildly, and you know it. Everything I want and suggest is just—brushed aside. I don't even feel that it is our wedding any more.'

'I'm sorry, Maddie.' Jeremy's tone was coaxing. 'But—it's a really big deal for the family, and Dad wants everything to be perfect. Times may be hard but Sylvester and Co is still riding high. That kind of thing.'

'If it only was a family affair,' Madeleine muttered. She sat back, reaching for her glass. 'For one thing, where have all those guests come from? I've never even heard of two thirds of them.'

'Clients of the bank, business associates, old friends of my father.' Jeremy sounded rueful. 'But believe me it could have been very much worse. What we have now is the shortlist.'

'I don't find that particularly reassuring,' Madeleine told him candidly.

'Oh, come on, it's not that bad.' Jeremy paused awkwardly. 'But it could be if you persist with this Italian nonsense.'

She said slowly, 'I can't believe you just said that. First it was a joke, now it's nonsense. Jeremy, we're talking about my work here.'

'It used to be your work.' His tone was defensive. 'But very soon now it won't be, so what is the point in your shooting off across Europe in pursuit of some musician no-one's ever heard of?'

'But people have heard of her,' Madeleine fired back. 'Flo-ria Bartrando was said to be the most wonderful young soprano of her generation. It was predicted she was going to be another Maria Callas, and then suddenly, with no explanation, she dropped off the edge of the world. It's been a major mystery for thirty years and now I have the chance to solve it.'

'But why you?' Frowning, he refilled their glasses. 'You're not the only researcher on the team.'

'Apparently the Italian contacts saw the programme on Hadley Cunningham's last symphony,' Madeleine said lev-elly. 'The one no-one knew he'd written. I did most of the research on that. So Todd offered me this.'

Jeremy's frown deepened. 'Frankly, darling, when you said you had something to tell me I assumed you meant that you'd handed in your notice as we'd agreed.'

'I said I'd think about it,' Madeleine said quietly. 'Having done so, I'm not walking away from a job I love without good reason.' She added, 'But I have booked out our honeymoon weeks as holiday.'

Jeremy stared at her as if she'd grown an extra head. 'And I'm supposed to be grateful for that?' he asked sarcastically.

'Well, you should be,' she said cheerfully. 'After all, you'd hardly want to go to the Maldives on your own.'

'I'm sorry, but I don't find this particularly amusing.'

'And nor do I. In fact I'm perfectly serious.' She gave him a rueful look. 'Jeremy, please try to understand.'

'What's to understand?' His shrug was almost petulant. 'Clearly finding material for minority interest television channels matters more to you than being my wife.'

'And now you're talking nonsense,' Madeleine retorted hotly. 'It's the twenty-first century, for heaven's sake, and most women combine marriage and a career these days in case you hadn't noticed.'

'Well, I want you to regard our marriage as your career,' Jeremy said, his lips tightening. 'I don't think you appreciate how hectic our social life will become, or how much entertaining we'll have to do. And I mean full blown dinner parties, not you rushing in at the last moment with a takeaway.'

She gasped. 'Is that how you see me? As some ditsy incompetent?'

'No, my sweet, of course not.' He was back in placatory mode. 'It's just that we're not sure you realise how much you'll be taking on, or how stressful you might find it.'

Maddie sat back in her seat, and gave him a straight look. 'I presume that's not the royal "we" you were using there? That you're quoting your father?'

'Naturally it's been discussed.'

She bit her lip. 'Jeremy—the wedding may have got away from us, but this is our marriage, and you must make him see that.' Her voice deepened in intensity. 'I have no intention of letting you down, or failing to provide you with the support you need in your career. All I ask is that you do the same for me. Is that so very hard?'

There was a silence, then he said, 'I suppose—not when you put it like that. I'll talk to Dad again. Which reminds me…' He glanced at his watch and pulled a face. 'I should be going. I'm due to meet him with some people at The Ivy.'

He paused. 'Sure you won't come with me? It's no problem.'

Maddie got to her feet, forcing a smile as she indicated the slim-fitting jeans and white shirt she was wearing. 'Except I'm not dressed for dinner at a top restaurant, which might create its own difficulty. Another time, darling.'

'So what will you do?' He sounded anxious.

She shrugged on her navy and white checked jacket and reached for her canvas shoulder bag. 'Oh—have a girlie night in, washing my hair, giving myself a manicure.'

And I have just told my fiance, the man I love, my first deliberate lie. Because actually, I'm going back to the office to do some more work on Floria Bartrando, but I doubt it would be politic to say so at this juncture.

Jeremy pulled her to him and kissed her. 'We mustn't fight,' he muttered. 'We can work things out. I know it.'

'Yes,' she said. 'Of course we can.' And kissed him back.

Outside the wine bar, she watched him hail a cab, then waved goodbye before beginning to walk slowly back towards the street where the Athene television production company was based.

She supposed that the recent confrontation had been inevitable, but knowing that made it no easier to handle. Somehow, she had to convince Jeremy that she could succeed as a working wife, a task handicapped from the outset by his father's forthright and openly expressed opinions to the contrary.

Maddie had known the Sylvesters pretty much all her life. Beth Sylvester, an old school friend of her mother, had been her godmother, and, as a child, Maddie had spent part of every summer at Fallowdene, the Sylvesters' big country house.

It had always seemed idyllic to her, but in retrospect she could see there'd been undercurrents which she'd been too young to pick up.

But somehow she'd known instinctively from the first that while her godmother would always be 'Aunt Beth', her husband would remain 'Mr Sylvester' and never become 'Uncle Nigel'.

Fallowdene was not in itself a beautiful house, yet to Mad-die it had always seemed an enchanted place, especially when Jeremy, the Sylvesters' only son, seven years her senior and light years older in every way, was there to be shadowed adoringly.

But she'd never allowed him to get away with any implication that they'd been childhood sweethearts.

'Arrant nonsense,' she'd teased, the first time it was mentioned. 'You thought I was a total pain in the neck, and went out of your way to ignore me.'

'But I've made up for it since,' he'd whispered, drawing her close. 'Admit it.'

Yet her most abiding memories were not of Jeremy at all, even though her initial crush had lasted well into her early teens.

What she recalled very vividly was the way the atmosphere of the house underwent a subtle change when Nigel Sylvester came home.

He was a man of just above medium height, who somehow gave the impression of being much taller. He had gone prematurely grey in his late twenties, or so Jeremy had told her, adding glumly, 'I hope it doesn't happen to me.'

Maddie had stroked his cheek, smiling. 'You'd look extremely distinguished.'

But if she was totally honest, she'd always found Nigel Sylvester's silver hair, which he wore slightly longer than was fashionable and swept straight back from his forehead, to be in odd and disturbing contrast to his curiously smooth, unlined face, and dark brown heavy-lidded eyes.

Nor was it just his appearance that used to unnerve her. His standards were exacting, he missed nothing, and although she had never heard him raise his voice in displeasure, Mad-die often thought it would have been better if he had shouted occasionally.

Such an annoying and idiotic heroine
By Jennifer L. Rinehart
You end up drugged, taken to a remote villa, your clothing removed, your jewelry and watch taken and wake up to a strange man who tells you that your freedom depends on the actions of your fiance's father, what would you think?

I think there is only one thing to think, that is that your kidnapper bears a grudge for your future father-in-law and that you are the unlucky pawn. Also, and I can't even believe this has to be stated, but here it is, you have been kidnapped.

For some strange reason, Maddie, the heroine of Count Valieri's Prisoner, doesn't get that. She repeatedly asks her captor if she's free to go, when she can leave (after the already stated action on the side of the future in-law) and if he is going to hold her against her will!

I know! Total mind bender! Get it through your silly head, Maddie, you have been KIDNAPPED. Abducted, shanghaied, snatched, held for ransom, etc., etc. But for Maddie, the concept seems to be beyond her ability to comprehend and this is where the story hits its first major snag.

The second most annoying thing about this book is Jeremy, Maddie's fiance. He is the worst kind of wimpy, whipped love interest. He won't even stay the night at her place after they have sex because he's worried what his daddy will think about him. Also, he's a bad lover and has allowed his stepmother to hijack the wedding. He never speaks up for Maddie, thinks her career as a journalist is a lame hobby and in pretty much every way possible is unlikable. I have a hard time understanding or respecting Maddie because she still wants to marry him and then after just a few hours around Andrea (aka Tall, Dark and Kidnapp-y) she's getting hot and bothered over another man, ugh, so flighty.

There's the requisite escape attempt, where Maddie has to be rescued from sexily torn clothing, wolves and trees, then they have to share a bed, he sleeps and she spends the whole night thinking about him. Oddly enough, taking her out of the castle and to the deserted cottage moved the story to a more believable place, but then Maddie started in with her maddeningly inane conversation and my interest faded away again.

All in all, I'd give this one a miss. There are better Craven novels to spend your time and money on.

Very Disappointed
By Tumbleweed
Ms. Craven is my favorite author. I always wait for her books to come out impatiently. But the plot in this book makes no sense. I agree with another reviewer. There was absolutely nothing interesting going on in the book for me. Usually I finish her books in one sitting. This one took me three days to finish!! :(

A Romance Junkie
By A Romance Junkie
I didn't care for this book at all, it was lame and I felt nothing for either of these to people. Maddie was a dumb doormat and he I can't even say much about because there was nothing there. He was even more boring then the doormat. In fact the only interesting people in this story was his mother "the opera singer" and her maid. It was a good story line and it could have gone places but these two people had no chemistry. The sex which only happened once was very one sided and it never happened again. I can't recommend this book, I gave it two stars and I over rated it.

Campaign 104 - D-Day 1944 (2) Utah Beach & the US Airborne Landings, by Steven J. Zaloga

The second title in Osprey's survey of the D-Day landings of World War II (1939-1945). On their western flank, the Allied landings on D-Day combined a parachute drop by the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions with an amphibious assault on “Utah” Beach by the US 4th Infantry Division. The landings came ashore in the wrong place but met weaker German resistance as a result. The heaviest fighting took place inland where the badly scattered paratroopers gradually gathered in small groups and made for their objectives. This book traces the story of D-Day on Utah beach, revealing how the infantry pushed inland and linked up with the Airborne troops in a beachhead five miles deep. Now the battle to break out and seize the key port of Cherbourg could begin.

A Yeoman's Effort
By R. A Forczyk
The latest Osprey campaign title on the British D-Day landings at Sword Beach and the 6th Airborne Division landings represents a mixed big. On the one hand, Sword Beach is a well written and attractive synthesis of the critical eastern flank of the Allied invasion. On the other hand, this book is hardly original and in light of the excellent Battleground Europe title Sword Beach by Tom Kilvert-Jones last year, Ken Ford's effort seems to be following in well-worn tracks. Despite the plethora of other titles on this subject, Ford renders a yeoman's effort and has produced a worthwhile summary of the British campaign in and around Sword Beach in June-July 1944. The title deserves five stars for content, three for originality and thus a compromise four stars.
Ford begins with a short section that introduces the origins of the battle and emphasizes that the seizure of the French city of Caen was regarded by Montgomery as the key to the British landing. After a detailed chronology, the author provides a short section on opposing leaders and then a seven-page section on opposing armies. The author makes good points about the British substitution of self-propelled artillery and anti-tank in the assaulting 3rd Division, but tends to unduly denigrate the German 21st Panzer Division. Ford is a bit vague about the 21st Panzer - which is odd because Colonel Hans van Luck's account of that unit in Normandy has been available for more than a decade - and suggests that the unit was not really combat worthy and composed of cast-off men and equipment. The real reason the 21st Panzer was not rated fit for service on the Russian Front was due to its lack of a Panther tank battalion, but it substituted an assault gun battalion and was a fairly heavy unit. The reason for the unit's poor performance on D-Day was not due to poor leadership or poor quality troops but rather, due to high-level confusion and tangled command control relationships. Various German commanders, from Runstedt and Rommel, down to the local Corps and division commanders, vacillated between going after the British airborne, going after the sea borne landing or waiting to launch a properly coordinated assault in strength. Ford then covers the opposing plans in seven pages. The British 6th Airborne Division landings are covered in 17 pages, followed by 29 pages on the Sword Beach landings, 6 pages on expanding the bridgehead after D-Day, and a short aftermath. A ground order of battle for both sides is provided. This volume has five 2-D maps (British 6th Airborne landing areas, German defenses in Sword Beach area, the landings on Sword Beach, the Allied lodgment at the end of D-Day, the Battle for Caen) and three 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps (British airborne landings, Sword Beach landings, 21st Panzer counterattack). There are also three excellent color battle scenes: the seizure of Pegasus Bridge, No. 4 Commando moves inland and the capture of Hillman position.
Overall, Ford's summary of the British operations in this sector of D-Day is accurate and succinct. Unfortunately, the author falls into the ex post facto trap of suggesting that once the British failed to take Caen on D-Day that Montgomery then planned to pin down most of the German armor in the eastern sector of Normandy so that the Americans could break out in the west. This is a post-war rationalization pushed by Montgomery's adherents, which conceals the reality that Montgomery had intended to seize Caen and exploit with armor on the eastern flank but he repeatedly failed to accomplish this. Furthermore, the author tends to blame the 3rd Division commander for failing to seize Caen but ignores the plethora of missions given to this unit (seize Caen, link-up with airborne, link-up with Canadians, repel German counterattack and eliminate resistance nests in sector). Although landings of the British airborne were a great tactical success they were operationally sterile because Montgomery wanted to drive southward, not eastward. If Montgomery really wanted Caen on D-Day, he should have dropped at least one airborne brigade on the northern outskirts of Caen, which might have resulted in seizure of at least half the city on D-Day. Too much effort was put east of the Orne River, for negligible gain. The British drive inland was also delayed for seven critical hours by the 150 German defenders in the Hillman position behind Sword Beach (one wonders where all the 79th Armored Division "funnies" - tanks specifically designed to deal with bunkers and obstacles - were during this period); the author views the capture of Hillman as an out-an-out victory but in reality, the stubborn defense of that position upset the British timetable.
Readers interested in Sword Beach should use this book in conjunction with Kilvert-Jones book, because taken together they pack a lot of information and insight on this subject. Standing alone, Ken Ford's book lacks some of the depth needed for really understanding why the British failed to achieve all their D-Day objectives and why the German counterattacks were so ineffective. Readers should also consult Robert Kershaw's excellent Piercing the Atlantic Wall, which offers more material on the British landings. Oddly, Ford makes little mention of Allied casualties at any point, so readers will have to consult other sources for that type of detail. However one area where Ford out-classes Kilvert-Jones' book is on information about the battlefield today, particularly concerning the German bunker-turned museum in Ouistreham and the Merville Battery.

Re: Dr Robert A. Forczyk's Review
By Mat
I noticed a few errors in Dr Forcyk's review, so feel urge to write a few correction in the hope that people will not be mislead.
Montgomery's strategy:
Refer to the Post D-Day phase lines, which suggested that Montgomery did intend to hold round Caen and thus attract the German armour, while allowing the American armies in the West to seize Cherbourg, as having a working port was vital to the success of the Invasion (though this did not work as the Germans destroyed Cherbourg rather effectively).
The so called "myth" about Montgomery's original strategy failing stemmed from arguments at command level based on the success of certain battles (eg Goodwood) failing to live up to Montgomery's hype. This was purely down to Montgomery's sometimes arrogant nature which upset certain people (Tedder, Patton etc). For rather obvious reasons, Montgomery could not publish his strategies at the time (the Germans would then find out), and so naturally the press asked questions as to why the Allied forces (particularly the British and Canadians, who I might add faced substantially better equipped troops, including the majority of the SS that was deployed in Normandy, and certainly more Panzer Divisions then the American armies) had appeared to stall in Normandy.
From this arose the "myth" of Montgomery's failed strategy. Though admittedly the British 3rd Division had failed to capture Caen, which was not planned for but was down mainly to problems on the beach, and the arrival of the 21st Panzer on the afternoon of June 6th.
And the relief of the 6th British Airborne Division was not the responsibility of the 3rd Division. The Special Service Brigade (the Commandoes) who landed at Ouistreham relieved the embattled 6th Airborne until their reinforcements arrived at 21:00 on D-Day.
The area East of the Orne was "operationally sterile"? Hmmm. Maybe so, if you call the holding of the entire Eastern Flank of the invasion "sterile."
Without the Orne bridges and the Breville Heights, and by not destroying the Dives bridges, the 21st Panzer could have quite easily rolled into the Eastern flank of the 3rd Division and perhaps got onto the beaches. The Orne bridges were arguably the most important single objective of the entire invasion!
Dropping an Airborne Brigade onto Caen?! I doubt that would have achieved a lot. Except massive casualties.
Hillman: The "funnies" were trapped on the beaches. Delays and the incoming tide, plus of course the Germans, resulted in traffic jams on the beaches. The British at Hillman were left with little armoured support. Bear in mind that this was the first time the 3rd Division had been in battle, and so over-emphasised the threat of Hillman and the German forces that were in there. Yes it could have been by-passed. But it wasn't. Fortunes of war.
"British failed to achieve all their D-Day objectives"? May I remind you that the 6th British Airborne was the ONLY D-Day unit to complete all their tasks (though the Merville battery was re-occupied later).
Caen is an issue that military historians will be arguing for the rest of time, only by considering all the options and decent sources (not Stephan Ambrose!) can we begin to get some understanding of what happened on D-Day.

A pretty good overview for serious readers
By Yoda
Any review of this book would have to start by mentioning that it is part of the Osprey “Campaign” series. As such it is relatively short, at only 96 pages. About a third of these (very crudely) consist of illustration of one type or another. Hence if one is looking for an in-depth academic tome of the landing this is not the book. However the book, despite this short length, is surprisingly detailed. This great detail would be of interest to the serious reader (i.e., specialist or knowledgeable) but may put of the lay reader who may be more interested in a less detailed but higher level analysis.

The illustrations, both photographs and usual Osprey 3-D maps, are particularly good. The maps illustrate well the defenses as well as the maneuvers used to overcome them. This is the case for both the amphibious landing forces as well as the airborne.

The book does have weaknesses however. The most important of these is that there is not an adequate discussion or analysis of how this particular landing fitted into the overall strategy of the Overlord landings as a whole. In addition, there is not an adequate discussion or analysis of how the success of the landings and airdrops in this sector fitted into the overall picture of the Overlord landings, in aggregate. Nevertheless, the landings and associated airdrops are well discussed and analyzed (at least from the perspective of those seeking a sophisticated discussion and analysis). Highly recommended for this audience (albeit less for the layman).

For those interested in all the Overlord landings Osprey has published a compendium entitled “Overlord: The D-Day Landings” that is very cost effective in that it contains all 4 of Osprey D-Day landings (and associated airdrops) in one book at a fraction of the cost of the purchase price of all 4 separately.

Inspirational but not necessarily practical
By Julia Flyte
Ella Woodward is a whiz at marketing. Her cookbooks look amazing and she writes in a super enthusiastic way that makes every recipe sound both easy and delicious. For that reason, it's a very inspirational recipe book but I have to say that there weren't a huge number of recipes that appealed to me in it. She does tend to use the same ingredients again and again: cashews, miso, maple syrup...they all feel a little repetitive.

I think her books are good if you are a single person or maybe a couple. They don't really deliver on the family recipe front. There are very few recipes here that my 12 and 15 year old sons would eat and the ones that they would eat tend to be variations on things we already make eg spaghetti carbonara, tomato pasta, veggie paella. But if you're looking for ideas for healthy breakfasts and lunches on the go, this is a terrific source. Her salads in particular have some terrific flavours.

Specifically, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, she tends to under-explain recipes which as a less than confident cook I find annoying. For example, her Pasta Arrabbiata recipe says "put the dried oregano, thyme, chilli and garlic into a frying pan with the olive oil. Let these cook while you cut the cherry tomatoes into quarters". Call me old fashioned, but I prefer recipes that use words like "low heat" or "keep moving in the pan" or "soften slightly". I don't like cookbooks that assume that I know what I'm doing, because I often don't!

Secondly, her ingredients are not infrequently either hard to locate (vanilla powder? baobab powder?) or FREAKING EXPENSIVE when you do. For example, her recipe for Chocolate Caramel Slices looks pretty yummy but I will not be making it because to produce 16 pieces I need to use a whopping 950g (2 lb) of medjool dates! That's more than the cost of the recipe book and it's only for ONE of the ingredients!

Familiar ingredients, beautiful styling, variable results
By Kat L
I have to agree with Julia - Ella is great at marketing herself and her cookbooks, but the actual recipes are a little disappointing.

So far, I've made her carrot cake muffins, wilted spinach and black bean salad, spiced lentil soup, spiced sweet potato stew, best baked sweet potato, and gooey black bean brownies. The wilted spinach and black bean salad as well as the baked sweet potato were simple, easy to prepare, and tasty. The others were kind of a disaster. The carrot cake muffins did not turn out at all like her photograph, which may be because whatever buckwheat flour she's using is much lighter in color than mine (Bob's Red Mill). Nowhere in this cookbook (or the previous, as far as I can see) is a brand or specific type of buckwheat flour listed, but there is clearly a difference. The muffins were also underbaked, quite dense, and barely okay tasting (the parts that were cooked through). I threw them out, and I hate to throw away food. The lentil soup proportions were off, so I wound up with a very thick soup that needed double the spices to have any flavor. The spiced sweet potato stew was similarly bland. This lack of spice was true for her recipes in her first cookbook as well, and a lot of people have mentioned it, so at least it's something easy to watch out/adjust for as you cook from her recipes. The gooey black bean brownies were not amazing - I made them for a group of friends and co-workers, everyone tried them, and decided one small bite was enough and they didn't want any more. The taste reminds me of something that I can't quite place, it's not bad, but the memory is definitely not of a delicious brownie. They aren't awful, but for me (as well as my friends and co-workers), they aren't something I'd want to eat again.

Since I frequently cook meals for myself, I was happy to see Ella offering some single or two-person serving recipes as well as some "fit for a crowd" recipes. One thing that I wish she would have pointed out in the instructions for the lentil soup is you need to use a small saucepan for cooking the lentils, because the amount is so small, it's impossible to cook them before the water evaporates - I needed to watch my lentils carefully and add water as necessary to prevent them from burning because I don't own a small enough pan to cook 25g of lentils. In the end, I regretted not simply making a normal sized batch - it probably would have been less work - or something else for dinner. I found the mushrooms+beans on top to be a bit odd, I didn't love the combination. Still, it is great that these single-serve recipes are here, and I like that she offers suggestions for what to do with the other half of whatever vegetable one recipe is calling for.

If you're looking for a cookbook with healthy recipes, that are simple/quick to prepare, you like the flavors Ella focuses on, and you're willing to adjust seasoning to taste as you cook, then this isn't a bad cookbook. It's not exceptional or mind-blowing, some of the instructions could be written more clearly, and I wish there were more intriguing recipes rather than photos of the author, but the cookbook is not a total loss either. There's nothing complicated about cooking any of the recipes although you might have to muddle your way through the instructions. The recipes are generally healthy and mostly low-cost, plus they can be thrown together with very little in the way of kitchen equipment. For ideas of what to throw together when I'm tired during the week and have a smattering of vegetables around my fridge to get used up, this cookbook is a good way to jump-start my brain into a dinner plan.

Similar to the first book but better layout and focus
By Musicfan
I like this book better than her first one because she seems to have ironed out some of the issues I noticed in its predecessor. For one thing, the book is much better organized into sections like Breakfast, Eating on the go, or cooking for crowds. When I cook, I usually go by meals not ingredients because unless I buy specific ingredients for a dish, I just grab whatever is in the fridge or pantry. Much like her first book, the recipes are pretty simple like pasta arrabbiata (takes no time to make and is always a quick lunch/dinner favorite) or cashew pesto (very good on roasted chicken with pasta). She tends to use the same ingredients: tanhni, chili flakes, maple syrup, or quinoa. It's not exactly creative, but these are pretty easy to find in most stores. The measures vastly improved for this book. It uses grams and not "mug" measurements like the 1st book. I own a kitchen scale because I prefer baking/cooking like this but it's definitely helpful when the measurements are correct. While the book isn't the most creative, I think it's a great base for introducing your own flare like roasted meats or different cheeses or whatever. The desserts do need some rising agents like eggs or baking powder, which I know she doesn't use, but they are essential to a successful bake. The book isn't groundbreaking or my favorite in my cookbook collection but I appreciate its simplicity.

Methods are illustrated with toy examples and real data and the R code for all routines is available on an accompanying CD-ROM.

With all the necessary prerequisites included, this best-selling book guides students from very basic notions to advanced analysis techniques in R and Bioconductor. The first half of the text presents an overview of microarrays and the statistical elements that form the building blocks of any data analysis. Review
Praise for the First Edition
The book by Draghici is an excellent choice to be used as a textbook for a graduate-level bioinformatics course. This well-written book with two accompanying CD-ROMs will create much-needed enthusiasm among statisticians.
―Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Vol. 74

I really like Draghici's book. As the author explains in the Preface, the book is intended to serve both the statistician who knows very little about DNA microarrays and the biologist who has no expertise in data analysis. The author lays out a study plan for the statistician that excludes 5 of the 17 chapters (4-8). These chapters present the basics of statistical distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, and experimental design. What that leaves for the statistician is the three-chapter primer on microarrays and image processing, plus all of the data analysis tools specific to the microarray situation. … it includes two CDs with trial versions of several specialised software packages. Anyone who uses microarray data should certainly own a copy.
―Technometrics, Vol. 47, No. 1, February 2005

Review
`Here we have the distilled and refined essence of the fruits of world-renowned functional analyst Kantorovitz, who spent 40 years teaching functional analysis to aspiring students of that domain. Everything one might reasonably expect such a student to understand is here, masterfully presented ... A strong bibliography and thorough index nicely complement the main work ... Highly recommended.' F.E.J. Linton, Wesleyan University (Choice)

`This book is a valuable and pleasant contribution to the wide field of "modern analysis"' Harro Heuser, American Mathematical Society
