2016's Fantasy Book of the Year
By Backstage Blogs
SL Jesberger is one of those rare authors that I simply cannot get enough of. This becomes an even bigger compliment to her skills when I admit that, in general, I am definitely not a fan of fantasy. Her Allainshire trilogy sucked me in, and I was honored when she asked me to be a beta reader for this new stand alone (although I truly hope she will revisit this one someday.) Though I have nothing but praise for everything I have read of hers (no little feat with my aversion to worlds and creatures that don't agree with my experiences), I have to say that I think Silverlight is her best work to date.

Before I venture into the actual review, I must take a moment to gush over the cover. It is simply spellbinding and absolutely stunning. The tribal design on the sword continues to haunt me, as does the siren call of the cover model's eyes. I even caught my husband picking it up to look at it a number of times, and commenting on the beauty of the sword, and the cover overall. This is not typical for him; I honestly cannot remember him ever commenting on any other cover art (other than pointing out that a guitar on one rockstar romance was set for a left handed guitartist.) I would highly encourage everyone to order the paperback version of this book if only so you can truly appreciate the artistic beauty of the cover. If set on your coffee table, I guarantee your guests will not be able to resist picking it up for a closer look. The mesmerizing aesthetic is rivaled only by the contents held within.

Kymber is one of the most fascinating heroine's I have read in, perhaps, forever. The adopted daughter of the owners of a highly acclaimed academy for swordsmen, she was one of the most skilled students to have ever walked its hallowed halls. It was also there that she met her soul mate and love of her life, Magnus. Their combined skills and passion had them well set to rule the worlds they inhabit (and remember, throughout this review, that it is not easy to get me to immerse myself in books of places and creatures that don't exist in my realm of experience) that is until Kymber is betrayed by one she trusts deeply, Magnus' own brother, and sold into slavery to the ruler of the darkest country in their lands. Meanwhile, Magnus has been led to believe that Kymber was killed in battle, and has spent the years since in deep mourning for his lost love.

When he comes across a group of vulgar thieves attacking and stealing the few worldly possessions of a maimed and nearly feral woman living in the caves of the area he is traveling, he cannot believe he has found his Kymber. She attacks him as viciously as she is able to, as his brother had led her to believe that Magnus was the one who had turned her over to the terrible fate she had faced for years until she had managed to achieve a near miraculous escape. Ashamed of her disfigurement, learning her parents had passed on, and simply not knowing whom she can trust, she has lived hand to mouth in hiding.

Ms. Jesberger does such a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life, and the power and passion of their emotions is impossible to resist. From beautiful prose to bawdy humor, and everything in between, I savored every word of this one. I continue to hope that she will decide to make this the first book of a series, because I loved and admired Kymber's strength, resilience, anger, determination and passion, and Magnus' clueless alpha male behavior that almost hid the depth of his passion for only this woman and the goodness that ran through him. In his softer moments he will melt your heart, in his most thick headed ones you will share Kymber's anger and frustration and in his protective and concerned mode you will simply swoon. SL's way with words has very few rivals; I love her prosaic details of place and emotion and simply adore her sense of humor. It makes for an addicting combination - even though this one has not officially been released I am already anxious for something else from her.

I would give this at least 10 stars if I was able, and obviously it comes with my highest recommendations. For adult audiences only for sexual situations and explicit violence.

Book Review: Silverlight
By Pamela K Kinney
Magnus Tyrix was riding to visit his sister, Karis, who he has not seen for nine years. Riding through the area brings back memories of his long dead love, Kymber Oryx, whom he fought beside and lost. He hears something coming from some caves south of Jalartha, a group of men are terrorizing a homeless woman. When she snatches his knife from the leader’s belt and executes maneuvers someone trained to do them, even with one mangled hand, he recognizes her as his long dead love Kymber. Except she is very much alive, though horribly thin, with a ragged haircut and dirty. Instead of visiting his sister, he takes her to a place where he can get her help. He discovers she thought he had been behind what happened to her, because of his brother Tariq and the barbarian, Garai. Eventually he takes her to his home to keep watch over her and train her back to the warrior she had been. He even promises to help her get his brother, plus retrieve her sword, Silverlight, from behind the throne of the barbarian Garai. For it was Garai who held her all those years, using her and making her fear. Magnus loves her enough to do anything for her. Even if it means sacrificing their future.

Silverlight is the romantic sword and sorcery we’ve been missing. It’s a mixture of Lord of the Rings and George RR Martin’s gritty, realistic saga, but Silverlight is still its own fantasy. One I am glad to add to my bookshelves.

For the New York Times bestselling author of Because You Are Mine and When I'm With You, Beth Kery, breaking the boundaries of desire has never been so daring, so dangerous, so…

Explosive

There’s something about his past that he can’t—or won’t—remember. Something that could get them killed. Most women would run from a man like Thomas. Not Sophie—even when she knows she’s playing with dynamite.

She can’t resist his electrifying seduction. She doesn’t want to control her willing submission to him. And she knows she never should have taken it this far. Because now it’s too late. Thomas’s past is closing in on them. And as danger and desire collide, Sophie knows that his next touch could consume her—if it doesn’t kill her first.

From the Author
From the Closetreader Interview:

Lea: I want to cut right to the chase and talk about, "Explosive" which is a raw and gripping erotic love story about Dr. Sophie Gamble and Thomas Nicasio, who I found both to be fascinating characters. Can you tell readers a little about Sophie and Thomas, Beth?

Beth: Thanks very much, Lea. I think raw is an apt descriptor, given Thomas' emotional state in this book.

Thomas and Sophie have seen one another on the elevator and in Sophie's medical practice in the high-rise where they both work. Sparks have flown, but they've never really had the opportunity to cross the threshold into each other's life. That opportunity comes when tragedy strikes Thomas Nicasio's family, and suddenly Sophie and Thomas are thrown together in tension-filled, dangerous circumstances.

In Thomas and Sophie, you have a couple that were meant to be together, but don't really find their way to one another until fate opens up a pathway, and they crash together...well, explosively. Thomas is a classic alpha male, an ex-Navy explosives expert and current businessman and Sophie is a physician. He likes to observe her as she works, and part of him knows--touch her, and you'll never go back. So in the way of men--;)--he's hesitant. When tragedy strikes though, he reaches out for Sophie without thought, instinctively. Because of his inner turmoil, his need for her is very intense and, as you said, raw.

About the Author
Beth Kery is a national bestselling author of more than twenty books. She writes in several genres, the common themes being intense, emotional romance and blazing hot alpha heroes. She also writes under the pen name Bethany Kane.

Very good for steamy, lusty, intense, erotic sex. Pretty good suspense with amnesia, organized crime, and murder.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Sophie is a doctor (internal medicine). Tom is an investment advisor who has an office in the same building as Sophie. Tom previously was an explosives expert for the NAVY. Sophie and Tom have seen each other frequently, being in the same building. They have been attracted to each other but never acted on it.

Sophie takes a few weeks off to spend time at her parents' lake cottage in central Illinois. To her surprise Tom shows up at her door. He has a bruise on his head. He desperately needs to have sex with her - she is willing. He leaves the next morning. She follows him back to Chicago to try to figure out what is going on. She realizes he has amnesia and doesn't remember going to her lake cottage. An FBI agent sees Sophie with Tom and tells her that Tom is in danger. Sophie asks Tom to come to her lake cottage for a few days. She wants to help him with his amnesia, plus she is falling for him.

There have been some murders of people close to Tom, and he may be next. His amnesia isn't helping. But during this time, he has an insatiable need for sex with Sophie. And there is lots of it. It's explicit and includes rear door activity, sex toys, light bondage, and mild spanking.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
Tom desperately hungers for Sophie in all ways, and she's happy to comply. The sex scenes were hot. I actually found myself with goose bumps a couple of times which surprised me. I wasn't sure whether it was the book or the room temperature (probably the book). Don't expect any relationship development which would have been nice.

An undercurrent is Tom's amnesia, causing him to be distant. Tom hears Sophie talking on the phone about him. She's getting advice from her psychologist friend. She doesn't tell this to Tom and she doesn't tell him about his amnesia because it may hurt rather than help his coming out of it. Therefore Tom is suspicious which creates some conflict/tension between the couple, which was ok.

The suspense part of the story relates to murder and Tom's adopted father being investigated for organized crime activities. This is a minor part of the story and happens mostly at the end of the book. It was not typical romantic suspense which has bad guys interacting with good guys throughout the book. But the suspense part was good. The ending was very nice. My favorite Beth Kery books are Daring Time and Release, but this is worthwhile if you like her style.

The title of the book touches several things including Tom's past work in the NAVY and a warehouse explosion. But I see it mostly relating to explosive sex, explosive relationships in Tom's past, and Tom's current temperament.

DATA:
Story length: 326 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 14. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 104. Setting: current day Chicago area and central Illinois. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic romantic suspense.

Really 3.5 Stars...
By jerseygirldownsouth
There was so much I liked about this book, but along the way I couldn't help feeling as if the story was being streteched out simply to make it a longer book. For me, that served to dilute its strengths. I liked both characters very much. Their attraction and the intensity of emotion between them was palpable. Though it exploded in an instant (and then many further instances), I believed in the veracity of their growing feelings because I believed what the author shared about the dance of interest/attraction they'd done since they'd first met.

But with the story artificially stretched (in my opinion) the tension of the danger/plot was diminished - and though the intimate scenes were very well done, they began to feel repetitive.

I would still recommend this book, but readers may feel impatient for more action (plot related) and feel as if key points had been made and re-made with regard to why Thomas was suffering behaving as he was, etc.

It certainly was - Explosive
By beachbaby
Explosive was exactly as the title implies. I found this to be a very well written book. Beth Kery weaves subtle little hints into the story that build and all come together at the end. I would explain this further but do not want to provide any spoilers. There's a lot of romance and it's hot, emotional and explosive too. A highly erotic read that just kept building. I highly recommend Explosive.

Life among the Ruins: Cityscape and Sexuality in Cold War Berlin (Genders and Sexualities in History), by J. Evans

As home to 1920s excess and Hitler's Final Solution, Berlin's physical and symbolic landscape was an important staging ground for the highs and lows of modernity. In Cold War Berlin, social and political boundaries were porous, and the rubble gave refuge to a re-emerging gay and lesbian scene, youth gangs, prostitutes, hoods, and hustlers.

Postwar Berlin as sociological curiosity
By Eric Dietrich-Berryman
Life Among the Ruins is an earnest attempt to survey and illuminate a hideously deformed world that lay in rubble. I have a direct personal interest in the subject and, sadly, the effort here is only a marginally successful treatise of Berlin and its population in 1945 and following. The problem is basically form over feeling. Jennifer Evans has no personal experience of those dark times, nor is one necessary. It is entirely necessary, however, to trade clinical detachment for something approaching a modicum of human understanding. In this she fails. For instance, John Keegan's The Face of Battle and John Barber's account of the siege of Leningrad are compelling histories founded on painstaking research blended with deep human insight. Evans depends on contemporary sociological jargon, supercilious observers, poorly understood archival sources in translation and shallow generalizations.

What is one to do with "purile fetishization," sexualization of the space," "desires of the ruins," "affective register," "commodity fetishism," or "existing social cavities" among the litany of cant with which this book is cobbled together? When Evans writes "burgomeister" (sic) it is obvious that she does not read or speak German. Her grasp of military history begs correction. There was no "armistice" in 1945. Germany surrendered unconditionally. Capitulation without quarter. No less questionable is the pronouncement that "The year 1945 did not herald a radical break from what came before, but 1961 did." The year 1945 broke with the past in Germany (as well as Japan) in the most definitive way imaginable. By comparison, the Communist sealing of East Germany in 1961 is a geo-political footnote.

Here's my experience as a boy among Berlin's ruins: we starved. We were evacuated to places other than Bavaria. In my case it was a children's home in Upper Silesia. At the finale my mother and I walked from the Harz back to Berlin, a journey of about 100 miles. It took us three months. We were always cold. We begged anything the Occupation soldiery would toss our way, especially cigarettes. Merciless competition came from limbless urchins, stumps wrapped in rags, who propelled their little wheeled carts at break-leg speed whenever we pounced on something a soldier had flung our way. We never badgered Russians. The French kicked. Brits had almost as little as we did. We looked for bits of wood and coal.

There were not a quarter million prostitutes trawling for customers. Women in Berlin gave themselves not because of a breakdown of morality but to get something to eat for themselves and their children and their aged parents, and to trap just a moment of warmth and comfort in an icy world. The winter of 1945-1946 was particularly harsh, as was the next winter. In this context, prostitution begs for a much more elastic, softer definition.

I smoked my first cigarette at age six. Most of everything I could cadge from the uniformed lords was brought home. Smoked cigarettes were stripped of their tobacco, re-rolled and traded for food. Hook an American and your mother became the envy of the neighborhood. Mine found a Royal Air Force cook. Jackpot! Night clubs like Resi and Die Badewanne became oases in a grim world, not the sex traps claimed. Some day there may be a comprehensive work that examines with care and sensitivity the Berlin of the Götterdämmerung postwar era. This is not that book.
