He nailed it....

This book has many virtues, but the one I was most grateful for is that Matt make it impossible NOT to understand how to wet-scrape braintan. He anticipates the reader's every possible wrong turn. So many skilled craftsmen are tongue-tied. Even if they know what they are doing, they cannot put themselves into the mind of a newcomer to their craft. Matt not only has a rare knack for doing just that, he also knows how to keep the nervous newbie calm. Anyone who follows Matt's directions will have a beautiful piece of buckskin, soft as velvet but tough enough to turn the meanest thorns...

A must-have for anyone interested in the way things were.

Writing a regular outdoors column for four SC newspapers and having been involved with primitive skills for over ten years, I can honestly say that Mr. Richards' book on hide tanning with the brain-tan method is one of the best I have seen. I first learned to tan hides with this method when I was still in high school and have enjoyed making my own buckskin ever since.
When I got my copy of Deerskins into Buckskins in the mail, my learning started with the picture on the cover and didn't stop until I reached the back cover. Specifically, the front cover photo shows a skin sack smoking, but the hide is hung from the rump not the neck as I had been doing. Mr.Richards goes on to say that this allows the hide to hang with fewer folds and so, prevents streaking from the smoke. He's right!!
Probably the best bit of knowledge I gained from this book is glueing the seam with regular elmer's glue, instead of sewing it shut or using clothespins. The glueing makes a tighter seam, is faster than the other methods, and because it is air-tight, it forces the smoke to penetrate the hide instead of rushing out of the gaps. Due to the pressure, the hide balloons, further reducing any folds or wrinkles in the hide. This is the fastest method I have ever tried.
These two bits of knowledge alone make the book worth the price asked but when you combine it with the author's easy, simple style of writing, you have a true gem. I've read it from cover to cover at least twice and will undoubtedly read it again. Take it from an experienced tanner, you won't be dissappointed.

Very Clear, Very Helpful

This book shows, in great detail and easy-to-understand language, the basic steps for natural tanning. Compared to other books I have read, this one really covers all the bases in a clear and concise way. Where other instruction books leave you saying, "Huh?", this one caters to those of us who REALLY have never done this before!
Excellent step-by-step directions. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book along with "Desert of Danger" and "The Challenge of Mata Nui" for my son who was very interested in the Bionicles and we wanted to learn more but I did not believe the movie would be appropriate so I bought these. Reading is better than watching. These three books are like old Greek lessons with excellent messages about personal control, perseverance, determination, patience and respect, of yourself and others. Hard to believe but true. All the lead characters are nice and have something to learn and overcome. No one is really hurt, no one dies and the "bad guys" are robot/monsters. Is there some "fighting", of course, these are warrior heroes and boys just like fighting and beating bad guys. We discuss the lessons that the hero learned. In this one it's about where a warrior's real strength lies and the answer is, In your BRAIN!!! It tells the kids that the best "fighters" are thinkers!! That's a good message. Can't recommend them enough. Old fashion message but in a modern context that appeals to todays boys. Depending on your child, appropriate for 4 and up.

Great Q&A On Outer Space

I love to ponder the mysteries of outer space, from planetary factoids to quasar theories. This book is chock full of all this and everything in between. The Q&A are taken from a monthly astronomy magazine and written from the perspective of "Merlin" who is from the Andromeda galaxy. Merlin offers a fun and lively way to discover outer space. I consider this book to be a nice, light read for all ages.

As with the first Merlin book, Neil De Grasse Tyson gives us another round of science learning--as well as his special brand of humor. If he were a bit older, I would have to wonder if he were a reincarnation of Isaac Asimov.

Beginning with the premise that understanding personal family history is essential for making informed choices, McGoldrick, director of the Family Institute of New Jersey, offers an innovative method of combining genealogical research with self-awareness. An exploration of family history, according to the author, is done by plotting a "genogram," which is a family tree spanning three generations. Genograms of famous families provided here?Roosevelts, Brontes, Freuds and others?illustrate McGoldrick's thesis that all families have repetitive patterns such as illegitimacy or suicide that have been hidden from descendants. "Learning about your family heritage can free you to change your future," according to family therapist McGoldrick (Genograms in Family Assessment, Norton, 1985). Here she explores family patterns of birth order, sibling rivalry, family myths and secrets, couple relationships, class, cultural differences, suicide, and loss. McGoldrick believes that, when viewed properly, these patterns suggest that many repeated family experiences are not entirely coincidental. The key tool used is the genogram-a sort of annotated family tree that maps out family information, which she illustrates by mapping the genograms of several famous families. Questions at the end of each chapter prove to be extremely useful in aiding the reader to uncover family information that was previously clandestine, seemingly irrelevant, or simply overlooked. Although the writing is a bit dry at times-apparently targeting the educated lay reader and professional-general readers will find that this book is very helpful in researching and understanding family information and patterns of behavior. Recommended for marriage and family studies collections in academic as well as public libraries.

A beautiful and readable book on family systems dynamics

This is a wonderful book. You won't see many family therapy jargons here. Insead, Monica McGoldrick delicately uses famous people's biographic stories to illustrate the complex intergenerational family systems dynamics. Ths book is easy to read. It is suitable for various kinds of readers. If you want to explore into your family history to better aware of what impacts your family have on you, this is for you. The book offers a lot of lively examples and tips on how to construct your own family genograms. You will experience the incredible power of the family systems, and also the intertwined influence of larger social-cultural-historical context. if you are a family/marriage counselor, the book is a necessary resource for you when you are dealing with the clients' family of origin issues. In the preface of “Answering Jihad”, Dr. Nabeel Qureshi says that when it comes to the topics of Islam and jihad, “There is too much confusion, too much misdirected anger, too much misinformation, too little balance, and too little grace to remain silent any longer.” That’s why I wanted a book like this one and I can full-heartedly say that the author does a magnificent job of bringing the much needed clarity, reason and the grace of God to our dialogue about Islam in our times.

Because Nabeel grew up in a devout Muslim family he has a solid and reputable background to speak from. His father was an officer in the US Navy, so the author is able to speak for the followers of Islam who love and support America. Nabeel was not your average follower of Islam, but one who studied in depth the teachings of his parents’ faith from childhood and defended it with passion well into his college days. However, during his pre-med studies he developed a great friendship with a fellow student that led to his conversion to Christianity. (Read “Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus”.) That change of heart and mind has taken Dr. Qureshi into being one of the leading voices in Christian apologetics with RZIM and during his presentations Nabeel is asked probing questions regarding Islam, jihad and how we should respond to Muslims, to the mid-east wars and the needs of the refugees.

In “Answering Jihad” Dr. Qureshi addresses eighteen key questions he has heard around the world and to give us the answers we are looking for without the anger, the bias, the politics and false assumptions that are so often presented in the media. The book is well written and presented in such a way you will not need a degree in theology or in social-sciences to follow along. There are also four very helpful appendices to assist the reader in understanding more.

If you are looking for clear answers as to why not all followers of Islam are the same, why all Muslims are not violent and why we can and should move forward with wisdom and compassion, then this book of only a 173 pages is for you. As a pastor I plan to buy a copy for every family in my church. It’s not liberal or conservative thought that Nabeel is sharing, but the Spirit of Christ at work in our hearts and in the times we are living.

Careful, Clear, and Compassionate

I was thoroughly impressed with this brief book on a very tough topic. In less than 200 pages, Qureshi carefully, clearly, and compassionately explained the details of jihad along with other related topics. Having been raised in a devout Muslim home, Qureshi speaks knowledgeably about these things. In three parts the book answers 18 questions. I won't list them all, but here's a sample:

Part 1: The Origins of Jihad. What is Jihad? What is Sharia? Was Islam Spread by the Sword?
Part 2: Jihad Today: What is Radical Islam? Who are Al-Qaida, ISIS, and Boko Haram? Why are Muslims Being Radicalized?
Part 3: Jihad in Judeo-Christian Context: Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? What Does Jesus Teach About Violence?

There are also four appendices that give some more detail on these topics, such as a description of the caliphate and a timeline of jihad in Islam.

This book stood out to me because Qureshi is a very good writer - though the book isn't too long, he explains the issues in a very readable way. There are some details, so it may not be for casual readers, but shorter chapters help make it easier to read. It was also refreshing to feel Qureshi's compassion throughout the book: though he is truthful about Islamic teaching, he does not smear Muslims or disrespect them. The book was written from a Christian perspective, but I believe anyone would benefit from it. In my opinion, Qureshi is a level-headed thinker and it very much shows up in the book.

Finally, the book is quite up to date: the publisher and editors almost set records in publishing it so quickly! And, despite quick publishing, I didn't find any typos or errors. I'm thoroughly pleased with this book, and highly recommend it along with Qureshi's other work, "Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus."

Enlightening and helpful

It's easy to follow and well written. It could do with more thorough referencing to statements of truth or understanding made by the author that I suppose a well educated and devout Muslim would already presume. But I'm a little uncomfortable with presumptive statements without some form of reference or guiding explanation for why a particular view or understanding can be stated as being true for a group of people. The arguments are explained well and based on my own experience with Muslim students in our local community and state university, I think the author is being objective and truthful in his assessment of the current movements among more fundamentalist practitioners of Islam.
