Predictions of who will win or lose a war, the authors find, depend not only on the power potential of a nation but on the capability of its political systems to mobilize its resources—the "political capacity indicator." After examining the aftermath of major conflicts, the authors identify national growth as the determining factor in a nation's recovery. With victory, national capabilities may increase or decrease; with defeat, losses can be enormous. Unexpectedly, however, in less than two decades, losers make up for their losses and all combatants find themselves where they would have been had no war occurred.

Finally, the authors address the question of nuclear arsenals. They find that these arsenals do not make the difference that is usually assumed. Nuclear weapons have not changed the structure of power on which international politics rests. Nor does the behavior of participants in nuclear confrontation meet the expectations set out in deterrence theory.

About the Author

Connie was born in Oxford, Ohio to Christian parents who pastored a Full Gospel church. She earned a B.A. degree in English and an M.A. degree in secondary education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Connie taught high school English for thirty-three years, retiring in 2009. Connie and her husband Wade Urban have ministered as the Lord has led over the years. They have pastored, evangelized, taught, and mentored. They now publish a monthly newsletter, write books, speak at retreats and churches, conduct workshops, and minister fluently in the gifts of Holy Spirit with signs and wonders following. Connie’s goal is to be about the Father's business.

It has often been said that the race is not always to the swift but to those who keep on running. Our Christian lives, a marathon so to speak, must go through necessary stages of maturity to bring forth the fulfillment of our destiny. In God's Plan For Success Nehemiah's Way, Connie Hunter-Urban skillfully parallel's the natural house construction with the ancient gates and shows how each of the gates are necessary and laid out in our lives to yield successfully more fruit. The gates natural substances of wood, bronze, and copper are representative of traits we possess in effort, strength, and pliability.
The heart of this book stemmed from the author not initially seeing the growth she felt she needed in Him. Her in-depth journey, research, and exhortations will encourage you to fight the good fight of faith and not lose perspective when the adversities surface. From our initial salvation(Sheep gate) through the last gate Miphkad(fulfilling of your destiny), the entire ten gate progressive course will challenge you, encourage you, and allow you to see the necessity of walking out needed phases to ultimately come to the place where you stand as a solid soldier in the army of God- prepared and equipped for good works. Amazing

This book is really good! I love Connie's writing style. This book is about the stages in our walk with God all the way till maturity. She uses the book of Nehemiah as a study to describe our stages of growth in the Kingdom. She describes the different stages in life such as falling in love with our shepherd Jesus, and second stage of sharing the good news of what has transpired in our lives because of King Jesus. He he he and going deeper in God this is really amazing. Knowing God and his amazing ways. Then her teachings on enduring the trials how God can use trials to shape us and transform us and to grow. If we hold on to him we will see him bring breakthrough. Getting our characters refined by God by knowing him more in the trials we go through. After coming from the valley the Holy Spirit fills us up and refreshes us. Then we start feasting on the word of God. Reading the word of God which brings strength, encouragement, direction, instruction and cleansing in our lives. Being filled through the rhema word of God. Then the horse gate doing warfare. After being equipped by God we are destined for success in everything through Jesus. Wow my favourite chapter was on worship and praising God and how that changes the atmosphere and brings miracles, healings and deliverance. The last stage God takes us to the place that he has designed for us and destined for us to be. Were we receive assignments from the lord. Wow I loved this book. This is the best book on the study of Nehemiah that I have read and I intend to read it over and over again.

Connie brilliantly lays out a map of our Christian journey simplifying and revealing profound insight to God's heart through her pursuit in unraveling the gates in the book of Nehemiah.
This is a solid study that could be used in small groups, bible studies, as well as for the individual hungry to grow in God and stay the course. Our path is so often longer with hiccups and hurdles and not the least bit comfortable at times, that understanding the process (and God's discipline, not punishment) can strengthen us for the tests that can ultimately take us out by way of skepticism or discouragement, thus overwhelming us before we realize our purpose.
Treasures and mysteries are given freely that He has hidden for his people to seek out, while multiple meanings are exposed and interpreted with the use of continuous scripture, solid Greek and Hebrew translations', defined meanings and intertwined personal anecdotes'.

Another beautiful novel by Asensi

Matilde Asensi is one of the queens of the historical novel - the problem is, Everything Under the Sky is only the 2nd book of all her books to be published in English - The first book, The Last Cato, is one of my all time favorite books - it dealt with quests in and around the Mediterranean - great read if you haven't read it already -
Everything Under the Sky is as great a book as Cato, but it is not the rollercoaster action of Cato, rather immerses you in the Chinese culture and legends, and in its own way sends you on another equally dazzling quest.
Elvira De Poulain, a Spanish painter living in Paris circa 1920 is travelling to Shanghai with her prudish niece Fernanda. Elvira has been notified her husband is dead. She does not know his death wasn't more than an accident.
After a harrowing journey, Elvira finds her husband incurred a crushing amount of debt. Selling everything she owned will not cover a minute part of the debt.
At a fete an Irishman approaches her that the lives of her and her niece's are in danger - that her husband was murdered because he had in his possession an artifact so precious it could clarify history and make the owner filthy rich to boot!
After finding Tichborne's story is correct, Elvira meets an antiquarian, Mr. Jiang, they embark on a journey to find the lost mausoleum of the First Emperor of China and the riches it holds!
The care Asensi writes with to paint a picture as eloquently as a Chinese calligraphy is amazing - the details of the trip through China to find the mausoleum, the description of the tomb itself, it so beautifully presented, you will want to stop and take in the intricasy and ease it was presented to you.
It is as wonderful as The Last Cato, but in its way, it has adopted the quiet dignity of the Chinese culture and shown an exciting quest in those eyes.

Indiana Jones meets the (Chinese) Maltese Falcon

I meant what I said in the title; "Everything Under the Sun," reads like an Indiana Jones adventure, except it has the mistiness, darkness and speed of "The Maltese Falcon." You might even include a little "Star Wars," since a good part of the book is about people finding their way in a new frontier, in hopes of bettering life for others.

Elvira is a young Spanish painter who finds herself in deep trouble in the Shanghai of the 1920s, due to her husband's weakness for drugs, women and other amusements. With her teenage niece, her servant, a very learned Chinese antiquarian and an Irish journalist, she sets out to unify the pieces of a cultural treasure which will earn her enough money to pay off her husband's debts and return to Paris.

The reader learns a great deal about Chinese culture, literature, history and ways of thinking as Elvira and her partners are attacked by the Green Gang, learn more about their treasure in a Chinese monastery, exist on rice balls and hot tea as they journey closer to their treasure and suffer all kinds of indignities in the process.

A little less description would have been fine but I enjoyed "Everything Under The Sky" and would definitely read another by the author.

Fun and Interesting Read

I Read The Last Cato quite some time ago, and having thoroughly enjoyed it, was thrilled to find that another of Asensi's books had been translated into English. Without repeating the general story line, I found reading this book to be like watching Romancing the Stone or Indiana Jones. It would make a great movie in that genre, or possibly a video game with lot's of puzzles and riddles to solve. It is easy to read, touches on some of the concepts of Taoism and gives you a sense of what China was like back in the 1920's. There are also references to China's long and fascinating history mixed in with the action. Just enough information to get your curiosity up and perhaps propel you to delve deeper into China's history, culture and philosophies on your own.

With few chapters or breaks and a very fast pace, you'll find yourself searching for a place to stop so you can grab something to eat. This isn't easy as each section segues into another adventure almost immediately. A very enjoyable and fun read!

About the Author
Born in 1974 in Nantes, France, Gerald grew up in nine different cities around the land of cheese. He graduated from the National School of Applied Art (also called Olivier de Serres) in 1998. Gerald's creativity blossomed at a web design company, an event studio, a video-games studio, and then several animations studios. Aside from illustration, Gerald has many other interests, including managing the French Comics Artists association "Rendez-Vous" (which published its first book at Akileos publishing in 2009), or co-leading with the Japanese Artist Daisuke Tsutsumi the artistic and charity project "Sketchtravel," a real sketchbook shared by 70 illustrators from all around the world.

When Trisha Speed Shaskan was a girl, she wanted to become a superhero. Her mother gave her a Wonder Woman costume. Her dad crafted her a tiara and bracelets out of metal to match. Trisha imagined she could fight evil, fly an invisible airplane, and get anyone to tell the truth. While she didn’t grow up to be Wonder Woman, she still uses her imagination to write stories and to teach creative writing. Trisha has taught creative writing to children and adults for thirteen years. She has published 26 books for children, and more are forthcoming. She has an MFA in creative writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Trisha currently lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Stephen, and their cat, Eartha, named after Eartha Kitt, famous for her role as Catwoman.

Honestly, this book was rotten!

I was really excited when I saw this book. I love it when an author takes a popular tale and turns it on it's end, usually with a healthy helping of snark.

The story begins with the wolf telling us he is a vegetarian (he especially loves apples) and that we should not judge him for the whole Red Riding Hood incident. He goes on to explain how he was really hungry the day he encountered Red Riding Hood....really hungry.

The next several pages show us Red Riding Hood and Granny looking like big juicy apples, vainly admiring themselves in every available reflective surface. The vegetarian Wolf justifies eating them because they are "rotten" and look like apples. I think there is supposed to be a lesson in there, but all I could find was that Red was asking for it.

My verdict: Skip it!

This notion is shared by organizations such as the Initiative for Interstellar Studies and the DARPA-funded 100-year starship project. This book specifically develops the principles for the construction of a living habitat within a worldship – a multi-generational starship that contains its own world that supports colonists as it travels across great distances between stars at a speed much slower than light.  Far from being a sterile industrial setup, such as the ISS, or even being a bucolic suburbia as proposed by Gerard O’Neill in the 1970s, this worldship will provide the pre-conditions for sustaining life beyond Earth’s environment, which may also lead to the evolution of non-terrestrial ecologies. Drawing on the principles of ecopoiesis and insights offered by the Biosphere 2 experiment that demonstrated what we have to learn about ecosystem construction, this book proposes first designing the soils of such a space. About the Author
Rachel Armstrong is a researcher developing novel sustainable technologies that harness some of the properties of life and has been developing a range of projects over the last 5 years that propose new approaches that are life-promoting rather than resource conserving. She has been developing prototypes and models for sustainable environmental technologies and collaborating with architectural practices and scientific research laboratories (University of Southampton, University of West England, University of Glasgow and the Southern University of Denmark). These prototypes have been recognized as having potential applications for industry and society, as noted in a Nature article.
Armstong’s interest in space dates back to the 1990s. Armstrong is project leader for the Icarus Interstellar group, working on laying the groundwork for the construction of a starship in Earth’s orbit within a hundred years and is Director of The Institute for Interstellar Studies for Sustainability and the Environment.
Throughout her career Armstrong has been recognized as a pioneer. The International Journal of Environmental Investing nominated her as among the most influential environmental academics in May 2014, and she was a coauthor on a paper published in 2013 for the International Journal of General Systems, awarded the distinction as best paper by Taylor & Francis. She has been named as one of the Wired 2013 Smart List, as one of the 2013 ICON 50 and one of the ten people in the UK that may shape the UK’s economic recovery by Director Magazine in 2012. In the same year Armstrong was nominated as one of the most inspiring top nine women by Chick Chip magazine and as one of the BBC Focus Magazine’s August 2011 edition’s ‘ideas that could change the world.’ Her TED Talk “Architecture that repairs itself” was voted as #1 on Diane von Furstenberg’s playlist and as #3 on Bjork’s list of favorite talks, heard more than 750,000 times. She was recently appointed Professor of Experimental Architecture at the University of Newcastle.
